CODES OF HONOUR

Mario Testino’s Codes of Honour explores the interplay of tradition, authority, power, and beauty embodied by ceremonial and uniformed guards worldwide. For centuries, uniforms have spoken a language of duty, legacy, and command. But beyond the ritual and regalia lies something deeper—a silent yet enduring reflection of history, identity, and national pride.

Testino has long been drawn to the presence and symbolism of uniformed figures, integrating them into his fashion photography as striking backdrops of authority and intrigue. Whether placing Natalia Vodianova alongside Moscow’s Zhukovsky Air Force Guards, Stella Tennant with the Peruvian Hussars of Junín, or Queen Rania with the Royal Circassian Honor Guards, these guards once served to heighten contrast and narrative. Now, with Codes of Honour, they are the narrative.

Expanding beyond fashion’s use of uniformed figures as a visual device, Codes of Honour shifts focus to the figures themselves—revealing the refinement of their uniforms, the discipline in their stance, and the command in their presence. Over the years, Testino has photographed distinguished regiments from 14 nations—including Argentina, Brazil, Portugal, Uzbekistan, and the Vatican’s Swiss Guard—offering a perspective that transcends cultural boundaries. From his first exploration in Mongolia to his most recent work in Peru, his imagery examines these figures not only as symbols of protection, safety, and defence but as living reflections of their nations’ histories, legacies, and regimental customs.

The power, authority, and inherent allure of the uniformed guard have long fascinated onlookers. These figures of discipline and order are both commanding and symbolic, embodying a legacy that extends beyond the individuals who wear them. Each guard represents meticulous artistry and unwavering dedication, from their measured formations to the intricate details of their regalia—epaulettes, cords, medals, and embellishments. Yet beyond their visual grandeur, they silently narrate stories of courage, honour, and collective memory, speaking to our enduring fascination with those who stand at the intersection of duty, prestige, and grace.

With Codes of Honour, Testino deepens his exploration of heritage attire, presenting a striking visual study of tradition, craftsmanship, and national identity. His images embody the tension between strength and elegance, authority and poise—drawing viewers into the depth, energy, and exactitude of those who uphold these traditions.
